Obituary for William Earl Petty

William Earl Petty, 73, of Hagerstown, MD, passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 25, 2023, at his home surrounded by loved ones. Earl, the second child and eldest son of the late Richard Foster Petty and Mary Frances (Mulkey) Petty, was born in Seneca, South Carolina on May 8, 1949.

Earl graduated from Pomonkey High School in Indian Head, MD in 1968. He enlisted in the US Air Force that same year and proudly served his country in Vietnam. A few days after returning stateside in 1970, he met his wife of 52 loving years, Cindy, whom he married two months later, following his, as he told it, top secret mission to the moon. He made his career in construction as a superintendent and retired from the Korth Companies in 2020, after working with them for 15 years.

Earl enjoyed fishing, playing the guitar, cheering on the Nationals (even when they were losing), and telling tall tales to whomever would believe them. He found joy in bringing joy to others and sharing laughter. In is later years he enjoyed sitting in his swing in the garden while watching for his favorite bird, the cardinal. Most of all he loved to spend time with his family, especially his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Cynthia E. Petty, his sons, Scott Petty and Andrew Petty and his wife Rhiannon, granddaughter, Grace, grandson Connor, sisters, Barbara Hughes and Robyn Lambert and her husband Tom, brother, Tillman Petty and his wife Marilyn and his fur babies Smokey and the Bandit and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and their families.

The family will receive friends on Friday, March 3rd at Harman Funeral Home, 305 North Potomac Street, Hagerstown, from 12 noon to 1:00pm with Funeral Services with Military Honors will immediately follow at 1:00 pm with Rev.
