Roger Lee Clippinger, age 77, of Hagerstown, Maryland died peacefully surrounded by love on Wednesday, May 3, 2023, at Meritus Hospital after a lengthy illness. He was born on March 26, 1946, he was the second of eleven children born to the late Samuel and Elsie Clippinger of Three Springs, Pennsylvania.
Described as a good man with a golden heart, he spent his time making life better for others, from mowing the neighbor’s yard, to delivering food boxes to those in need and providing transportation services. He always made special time for just him and Charles. He was a dedicated father, husband, brother and friend, and a shining light to his father and mother who called him “Sonny Boy.”
He graduated from Southern Huntingdon County High School, Orbisonia, Pennsylvania in 1965 and immediately accepted his country’s invitation to serve. A proud Vietnam veteran, Private First Class Clippinger served in the US Army’s Fourth Infantry Division from 1965 to 1967. Roger was awarded two Bronze Stars for his service. He then pursued his education receiving degrees from Hagerstown Community College and Towson University. In 1971, he joined the Peace Corps where he taught agriculture to people in villages throughout the Philippines and Malaysia. He spent much of his career in the care of people with limitations, and as a truck driver. He worshipped at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Hagerstown.
In addition to his parents, Roger was preceded in death by baby sister, Anita Clippinger Auker, and two half-brothers, Robert and Carl Clippinger.
Roger was the beloved husband of 43 years of Aida B. Clippinger, who he met and married in the Philippines on January 4, 1979, loving and devoted father of Charles Hutts, cherished brother of, Esther Scott of Fort Walton Beach, FL, Elaine Hutchison (“Brother” Bill) of Hagerstown, MD, Freda Miller of McConnellsburg, PA, George Clippinger (Sarah) of Needmore, PA, Donna Raymond of Wichita Falls, TX, Donald Clippinger (Adele) of Three Springs, PA, Mary Swartz (Rick) of Huntingdon, PA, Fred Clippinger of Three Springs, PA, Glenda Machia, Ephrata, a half-brother, James Clippinger of Martinsburg, PA and a host of loved ones for whom he was a guide. Also, survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends on Monday, May 8th from 6:00pm to 8:00pm at Harman Funeral Home, 305 North Potomac Street, Hagerstown, MD. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, May 9th at 10:00 am at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 224 W. Washington Street, Hagerstown, MD with Reverend Father Ernest Cibelli as celebrant.
