Obituary for Robert Paul Knotts Sr.

Robert passed away at home in Thurmont, MD and went home to be with his Lord and Savior on March 2, 2022.

He was born at Russett, WV on November 20, 1933, the son of the late E.C. and Velma Vannoy Knotts. Bob attended Canal Fulton, OH High School where he was a repeat All-County basketball and football selection, graduating in 1953. He attended Kent State U., Kent Ohio on a football scholarship graduating in 1956 with a B.S. in Business Administration. Bob served in the U.S. Army from 1956-1958 in New Orleans, LA where he was a sports activity specialist.

In 1958 he married Peggy Patricia Decossas of New Orleans, LA and they subsequently had four children, Jodi Knotts and husband Paul Tooley of Boonsboro, MD; Lori Knotts of Thurmont, MD; Karen Knotts and wife Tracey Law of Thurmont, MD; and Robert P. Knotts Jr. and wife Phyllis Jones Knotts of Little Orleans, MD. He and Peggy enjoyed raising their children and are pleased with the children’s lives. He has seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Bob was a Senior Technical Recruiter for Goodyear Aerospace Corporation from 1962-1966, receiving an M.B.A. in Personnel Management from Kent State in 1965. He was Personnel Manager and later Director of Administration for the Mitre Corporation at McLean, VA from 1966-1975, and he retired in 1993 as Classification Specialist at the Montgomery County Maryland School System where he served from 1975-1993.

He enjoyed and participated in several sports throughout his life, including handball, racquetball, tennis and golf. Bob was especially fond of exercise and workouts, nature and the outdoors. He was a long-term member of National Arbor Day Foundation and during his lifetime planted many hundreds of trees, shrubs and ornamentals.

He was a past member of the Washington Technical Personnel Forum, the Association of School Business Officials, the National Arbor Day Foundation, and several Y.M.C.As. He was a past member of Otterbein Church, Waynesboro, PA.

Bob was predeceased by his parents and only brother, Calvin R. Knotts. His beloved wife of fifty-nine years passed away in 2017. Bob is survived by his wonderful children, seven grandchildren, five great grandchildren and his sister Deborah Frey of Florida.

At his request Bob was cremated. Interment will be at Rocky Gap Veterans Cemetery in Flintstone, Maryland where Bob and Peggy will be laid to rest together with military honors. The date of this service is yet to be scheduled.
