Obituary for Robert MacGilvra Beaton

On February 12, 2023, Robert McGilvra Beaton (Bob), 71, of Hagerstown, Maryland, died of a heart attack after a lengthy struggle with prostate cancer.
Bob was born on May 22, 1951 to William and Mary Beaton. As a child, Bob lived in many places, mostly in the Northeastern US, and graduated High School in Houston, Texas. He served with the US Navy in Guam during Desert Shield and later in Okinawa. After his service, he became a plumber and graduated from the University of Maryland with a Bachelors Degree in General Studies. On a trip to South America, he met Clara, and married her on July 5, 2003. He worked at Gallaudet University in Washington DC as a Maintenance Supervisor for 17 years.
Bob was a kind, modest man with many talents. He spoke fluent Spanish and American Sign Language. He was known for his good sense of humor and selfless demeanor, and when he visited a home, he usually left it improved in some way. Bob had eclectic interests, but his passion was to know how the world worked.
Bob is predeceased by his father, William, and his mother, Mary. He is survived by his wife, Clara, his stepmother, Nancy, his brothers Mike, Doug, and Allan, his sisters Cynthia and Susan, and many cousins, nephews, and nieces.
A funeral service will be held at Harman Funeral Home, 305 N Potomac St. Hagerstown, Md, on February 24, 2023 starting with a viewing at 10am, and a service at 11am, followed at 1pm by internment at La Mies Church Cemetery at 13864C Old National Pike, Mt. Airy, Maryland.
