Obituary for Richard Carl Ley

Rev. Richard Ley passed away on February 8, 2023 in Boonsboro, MD after a long battle with cancer. He was born in Sheboygan, WI on February 1, 1944 to Ralph and Ruth Ley.
Richard was a retired Full Elder in the United Methodist Church.
He graduated from Waukesha High School in l962 where he played trumpet in the marching band, concert band, orchestra, pop and jazz bands.
He graduated with a B.A. from Lakeland College in 1966 where he had been president of the student body and college choir.
Richard graduated with a Master of Divinity from United Theological Seminary in 1969, where he was the recipient of the New Testament Theology Prize.
He attended the School of International Service at the American University in Washington, D.C. from 1970-1972.
Ordained a minister in The United Church of Christ, he then transferred to The United Methodist Church as an Elder. He served churches in Wisconsin, Maryland and New Jersey until retirement in 2006.
Richard’s love for learning never ceased. He was an avid reader and enjoyed exploring new places.
Richard was a humble man, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend to many.
He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Rita Hager Ley; children, Lisa and Timothy Ley; step grandchildren, Courtney and Dillon Bowie; siblings, Margaret Wennen, James Ley and John Ley.
Richard often said his greatest joy was being married to Rita and his greatest tragedy was losing Rita’s son, Tim Bowie to cancer.
The family would like to thank Hospice of Washington County for their care in his final days.
