Potie “Pookie” Pettway, Jr., 58, unexpectedly passed away in Hagerstown, Maryland on Saturday, February 12, 2022.
Born on Monday, October 28, 1963 in Boykin, Alabama, he was the son of Peggy and Potie Pettway, Sr. He was preceded in death by his brothers Jason and Justin Pettway.
He is survived by his wife Fredau Pettway; three daughters – Jocelyn, Naomi, and Nicole Pettway, and his son Tyler Pettway; his parents Peggy and Potie Pettway, Sr.; three sisters – Carol Barnes, Amy Pettway, and Pearler Pettway; and a host of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.
Potie graduated from John L. Leflore High School in Mobile, Alabama in 1983 and served in the US Marine Corps Reserve and as active duty in the US Air Force as a Security Specialist. He served in support of Operation Desert Shield/Storm/Calm and was stationed overseas for many years in Germany and the Netherlands. After his military career, he worked as a Grants Management Specialist for the Department of Health and Human Services. He loved to travel.
Potie was always ready to help. If you needed anything, no matter day or night, he would be on his way to help you. Even though Potie had many health issues, he stayed upbeat and positive, always looking at the bright side and injecting humor into the situation. He will forever be remembered for his wit and generous spirit.
Service will be private with arrangements made by Potomac Valley Cremation Center in Hagerstown, Maryland.
A Celebration of Life will be held in Mobile, Alabama at a date and time to be determined.
