Obituary for Jennifer Elyse Karn

Jennifer Elyse Karn (Kufera), 47, passed away on November 26, 2022 at her home after a courageous battle with soft tissue sarcoma. Born on June 24, 1975 in Baltimore, she was the daughter of the late Walter Kufera Sr. and the late Roberta Kufera (Abt). She is survived by her husband of 21 years, David, her son, Noah, her daughter, Emma, her brother, Walter Kufera Jr. (Shirley) nieces, Ashley Kufera and Elyse Kufera, several aunts, uncles and cousins. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her younger brother, Christopher Kufera.

Jennifer dedicated her life to middle school education. After graduating from Mount St. Mary's University in 1997, she began her teaching career in Baltimore at St. Elizabeth's of Hungary in 1999. In 2001, she was hired as the middle school language arts teacher at St. Mary's Catholic School in Hagerstown. She poured her heart and soul into teaching, consistently learning new technologies and implementing them into the classroom. She earned a Masters of Education specializing in Instructional Technology in 2005 from the Mount. Twice she was named St. Mary's School Teacher of the Year. Her excellence in teaching was further recognized in 2019 by being named the Archdiocese of Baltimore Middle School Teacher of the Year - their highest faculty honor. She worked for the Archdiocese of Baltimore for 25 years.

Jennifer was a faithful member of St. Ann Catholic Church. She served on the pastoral council, was a greeter, eucharistic minister and lector.

The family will receive relatives and friends at Harman Funeral Home, 305 N. Potomac Street, Hagerstown on Thursday, December 1, 2022 from 1:00 to 3:00 and 6:00 to 8:00 pm. A Vigil Service will be held at 7:45 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, December 2, 2022 at 11:00 AM in St. Ann Catholic Church, 1525 Oak Hill Avenue, Hagerstown. Msgr. J. Bruce Jarboe will officiate. Interment private.

In lieu of flowers since there is no graveside ceremony, memorial donations may be made to the Jennifer Karn Memorial Fund held at the Community Foundation of Washington County MD, 37 S. Potomac St. Hagerstown, MD 21740 or online at www.cfwcmd.org .

These tax deductible funds will be used to establish a scholarship in Jennifer's name at St. Mary Catholic School.
