Dolores Renay Harmon, daughter of the late Mary and Albert Harmon, Sr., and sister of the late Dorothea “Skeet” Harmon was born on July 4, 1954 in Chestertown, Maryland. She departed this life on Monday, October 30, 2023 at the age of the 69.
Dolores, “Sue” as she also affectionately called by family and local friends, grew up in Chestertown. She was a 1972 graduate of Kent County High School where she was a varsity letter sportswoman, playing softball and being the co-captain of the women’s Field Hockey team. Following graduation, she attended Bowie State University where she graduated with a degree in Sociology and became a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. She moved to Hagerstown, MD and began her career as a social worker.
Dolores was a long-time employee for the State of Maryland, Twenty-four years with the Department of Social Service and Twenty-three years with the Maryland State Department of Education, Office of Child Care, as the Regional Manager, serving Washington, Allegany, Garrett, and Frederick Counties. She retired from the State in 2021.
Dolores loved volunteering and serving on various boards including the Horizon Goodwill Industries, Justice’s S.A.K.E.(assistant treasurer), Infant Fatality Review Board at Washington County Health Department, and the Washington County Department of Social Services Executive board. Dolores also volunteered for many years in the Prison System in Washington County, providing training to inmates on Alternative to Violence (AVP) as well as a member of Life Styles and Community Corrections Services (CCSC) at Maryland Correctional Facility.
Dolores was a member of Sharon Temple #160 of the IBPOEW (Improved Elks), Rainbow Council, Tri-State Association and Past Grand Daughter Ruler. She served as a Past Ruler, Recording Secretary, and a member of the Tri-State Shore Bank Department. Grand District Deputy for Sharon Temple #160 and Madame C J Walker Temple #509.
She was an active member of Ebenezer A.M.E Church serving on the Usher Board and the Board of Trustees.
She played cards once a month with a group of friends for many years and was also on the Duck Pin Celebrity Bowling League in the past years.
She leaves to cherish her memory, her brother, Albert Jr. (Boe), a sister, Darlene, adopted sisters Bettye, Barbara and Monica (cousin), adopted brother/cousin Leonard Jr (Petey), her line sisters (Glenda, Wanda and Karen) Godchildren Leonard III and Mercedes and her boys, Blackie and Mason (her cats). Three uncles, Leonard Sr (Clara), Robert (Diane) and Charles, and countless cousins and friends.
The family will receive friends on Friday, November 10th from 6:00pm to 8:00pm at Harman Funeral Home, 305 North Potomac Street, Hagerstown, MD and again on Saturday, November 11th from 10am to 11am at Christ Reformed Church, 130 West Franklin Street, Hagerstown, MD, where funeral services will be held at 11:00am with Pastor Mulberry officiating. Interment will be held on Monday, November 13th at 11:00am at Emmanuel United Methodist Church Cemetery, 6698 Church Lane, Chestertown, MD 21620.
